02 Mar 2018
Helen Jones H&S Warrington North MP Helen Jones, in her role as Chair of the Petitions Select Committee, has responded to the government’s announcement that £45 million in funding is to go to brain tumour research.

This announcement was in response to a report from a Working Group, which was set up as a result of the Petitions Select Committee's report into the issue in 2016.
Helen Jones MP said:

"The announcement by the government that brain tumour research in the UK will receive additional funding is hugely welcome and long overdue. We will, however, want to ensure that this is new money and represents additional investment.

"The announcement is the result of a petition signed by more than 120,000 people and an inquiry by the Petitions Committee. Our investigation found that brain tumour patients are failed at every stage – from diagnosis and treatment to research funding.

"The government seem to have accepted the urgent need for action. This is testament to the tireless campaigning of patients, their families and the brain tumour research community.

"Our work is not done. The Committee will want to make sure that brain tumour patients and their families continue to be heard by the government. More funding is very welcome, but there remains a need for improvement in other areas, including better training for doctors, to improve diagnosis rates."
